I know that there are quite a few web directory owners using PHPLD, so here are a few tips that have helped me out along the way.
RSS feeds - I don't use them, while others have a preference for them I see the urls getting indexed and added to the Supplemental index. For some reason there is an impression that having many supplemental pages is a bad thing;
not always true, but you may not want these pages indexed as such. It's really a personal preference.
Pagination on early versions - if you have more than one page in a category you should check the pagination to see where the links are pointing. In v3.06 the links at the bottom of the page can contribute to duplicate content. The
Page 1 link points to
/page-1.html and not the category root. There's a mod available at PHPLD forums with great instructions on how to edit the files to change this. While minor, I think it's still something you should consider. Why waste PR on a page that's just going to end up as a Supplemental Result.
Nofollow your sorting options. If you offer options to sort your directory listings Alphabetically, by Hits or PageRank, it's a good idea to add the nofollow attribute to these links to help cut down on the Supplemental results. Consider how many categories you have and multiply that by the number of sorting options available and you'll see how the supplemental pages can start adding up pretty quickly.
I'm sure that others can contribute a few more constructive tips.
